I was THERE!
As you’re probably all aware by now, McCain’s VP choice is Alaska’s governor, Sarah Palin. (unless you came straight to my site for your latest and most exciting news… in which case you might need mental help.)
As some of you know, I was at the rally where he made the announcement.
First, let me start by saying, if you go to a Democratic rally and shout ugly comments, the people there will give you dirty looks and yell things at you. But at a Republican party rally, you’ll get punched in the face. As Senator McCain came onto the stage to make his announcement, some idiot started yelling obscenities at him, saying something about “go back to Hanoi.” (which just tells me he’s the lowest schmuck on the planet.) At first, people were throwing garbage at the man, but as the man persisted, he had to be escorted out by the men in dark suits because several large men in the crowd were heading over to him, shouting something about “Shut you up with my fist!” Once the man was removed, the whole crowd cheered and McCain (who was trying to remain polite and professional) gave a little smirk.
Outside the rally, there was a large group of protestors shouting rudeness with the most ignorant banners I’ve ever seen. So I embarrassed my husband by shouting, “Go home you friggin liberal hippies!” To which the crowd around us laughed and jeered at the protestors. I don’t believe Derek will go to anymore rallies with me. You see, my voice is sore from yelling so long and loud at the rally and Derek is embarrassed easily. I’m told my voice carries well. Derek’ s face was red and his shirt was white and blue. How patriotic.
Meanwhile, my opinion on McCain’s running mate is :HOORAH! If you don’t know much about Mrs. Palin:
-She’s been governor of the US’s largest state, Alaska, for nearly a year and city mayor of Juno for several years. (So right off the bat, she’s already got more experience as a VP than the Dem’s choice for president.)
-She’s a mother of five children and extremely pro-life.
-Her eldest son is currently heading to Iraq to serve his first deployment.
-She’s cut Alaska’s state debt by over a BILLION dollars.
-She’s an enemy of what she calls “Good Ol’ Boy” politics and has proven it by the maverick way she’s run her state. There’s a saying: “The fields of Alaska are littered with the bodies of those who crossed Sarah Palin.”
-Her nickname is Sarah “Barracuda” and for good reason. When she sees a business injustice, a social injustice or any other sort of wrong-doing, she gets after the person causing the problem and shuts them down.
Growing up in a small town, she’s always stood up for what’s right. I realize that unless something happens to the President, a VP doesn’t have much of a job, but regardless of what her position may be- she’ll do a fantastic job.
Not only that, McCain- you clever dog.
When people said you were too old, you picked a VP who is very young.
When people said you were too liberal for the conservative republican ticket, you picked a VP that was in NO WAY liberal in any measure. I’m feeling more and more republican everyday. Until now, I was eyeballing the Libertarian party.
When people were upset that they couldn’t get a woman (Hillary) into the White House, you fixed it to make history: the first woman vice president.
A well played chess move, Mr. McCain. Well played. I think both McCain and Palin have one heck of a journey ahead of them, however, they’re both famous for not backing down.
The dems are already releasing statements about how little experience Sarah P has… but she’s already got more than double the experience of the Democratic candidate. They need to toe the line here. When their candidate decides he wants to play nice and “talk” with the terrorists who bomb our cities, our candidate and his Veep will already be blowing the asses off the terrorists. Negotiations… bah.
By the way, I was so psyched to get so close to the stage.. I was going to record McCain’s announcement as he said it and post it here for you guys. But as he was just about to say Sarah’s name, my battery died. So enjoy the fifteen seconds of McCain *before* he said his VP’s name.

I’m pretty jealous. I was pretty surprised that McCain picked Sarah Palin. We hadn’t heard much about her at all. That McCain has all sorts of tricks up his sleeve
I liked what she had to say in her speech and I have to admit, I got a little bit more excited about this election.
She was relatively unheard of, so the Dems are going to have to work really hard to find bad stuff on her.
So either way, whether it’s Obama as the first black president or palin as the first female VP, we’re gonna make history this year.
BWAHAHAHA! Sucks about your battery.
@TheCheshireGrins -
I have to think that everyone who was a Romney supporter because of how conservative/pro-life he was will gladly turn their votes back to McCain because of his fantastic choice. he found a little miracle in his back pocket because she’s awesome.
@avenuetotherealsbiggestfan -
*Laughs* Thanks, smart alek.
I’ve heard Rush Limbaugh talk about Sara Palin quite a lot. Spectacular choice for McCain! Whee! Let’s just hope people vote with their brains!
Well, if they can get Obama’s Hollywood glitz out of their eyes, they MIGHT use their brains. As the introductory speaker announced, “We need a workhorse, not a show pony.”
that’s such an awesome experience … i’m happy you were able to be there!
@BarelyJen -
See? That’s classy of you. I wish more people could feel disagree on candidates and still be civil.
You are very loud at rallies.
@life_by_us -
thank you for the complement.
in regard to your comment: i totally agree!! i respect people for having opinions on the issues and their respective candidates.
we’re not all going to agree all the time, but as long as we’re informed and choose what’s right for us, i love it.
we were granted the freedom of speech, the freedom to choose and the freedom to vote. we should use it wisely.
Hmmmm…..very interesting to see what the Republican National Convention will look like next week.
I do hope when you told the “friggin ” liberal hippies to go home you said “Please. After all we did teach you to be polite. LOVED IT!!
@old_and_cranky -
Actually, I didn’t say please for the first time in my life, Memaw. I figured I was already going to hell for breaking my dog so I took the risk.
You know, my mid-wife was astounded when I was giving birth to Aidan at how polite I was. “Yes please… AAAARGH!!! No, ma’am. Thank you. EEEEEEK!”
That was your doing.
For the first time, I’m…actually excited about November….should see my BOLD prediction…
hahaha.. my husband would have KILLED me. he’s pro-life, but very very anti-embarassment.
great blog. i posted it on my facebook.
My Dad: What do you think about McCain’s VP choice?
Me: I thought it was absolutely genius.
What I liked about his announcement is that McCain totally bumped Obama’s messiah speech in Denver off the headlines. Very clever!
i know i’m going to sound like i’m trying to be contrary but i promise i’m not. have you ever been to a democratic rally? if so why? you’ve always been much more conservative in my eyes…
also is she not absolutely gorgeous? the first time i saw her i swear my jaw dropped. but i do worry about her and her family. i worry about her because she’s a mom (and i bet a great one) – its going to wear her out to try to be both the vp and a mamma; its going to make her sad when she misses big events or feels disconnected to her family. i feel bad for the family because they’re going to miss her and have to adapt to such a new lifestyle… it will be a heck of a challenge. a challenge which is even more compounded because her youngest has down syndrome… the doc’s told her that the baby would have down syndrome before he was born but she and her hubby refused to abort. talk about inner strength and courage. it will be interesting to watch her this fall (and possibly beyond).
and it was such a great political move, even if its a little frustrating (people are already saying she was nominated only because of her gender and youth – not her hard work). i mean first she’s pretty young thus making people calm down about mccain’s age – then she’s a woman which will scoop up several of hilary’s old followers, and finally because she is a mom people will see her more as a family oriented person (obama has a family but you get the impression that they’re the wife’s responsibility)…
i like some aspects about her – first the family thing is HUGE to me. next she has and is raising her children to realize the importance of our nation and its military (i.e. the oldest son). third she’s a woman which makes me excited from a feminist perspective – could this be the start of a new trend? and most importantly: she cut back on the corruption that was surrounding the government in Alaska (plus she’s an Idaho native – i think that’s what the news sad)… it is time to cut back on our nation corruption so that we can actually get work done.
ok that’s my huge comment – sorry its so long but…
very interesting election, at least this is democracy system…unlike protest in Thailand, we voted then some stupids have been trying to drag our votes away from government house! it makes me wanna puke all over even if i was not pregnant! haha..
i think whoever will be VC will be proved that they were worth it when they were needed! Wow next four years will be very very interesting for me…
*I wouldn’t walk 500 hundred miles*
Oh sorry, I was jamming to your song! Glad you had a good time at the convention.
Have a great weekend, Amanda!
McCain definitely stole Obama’s acceptance speech thunder and ripped away any momentum Obama’d hoped to achieve from the DNC. I’m a bit concerned about the fact that she has zero foreign policy experience. My boss says this totally sealed the deal that he won’t vote for McCain – the old guy and the inexperienced person as VP.
I’m not there, and I find this an intriguing pick. I’ve been debating about whether to even vote in this election since I wasn’t sold on McCain as a conservative and there’s no way I’m voting Obama!
Anyway, we’ll see. Completely stole the headlines though, so good move there.
How’d you score tickets to the rally? And aren’t you glad you haven’t left for Texas yet?
I am so jealous!!! I wish I could have been there with you !! I totally would have joined in shouting at the protesters with you! I’d heard a rumor about Sarah Palin the night before and had already started to do research on her background. McCain totally just secured the presidency by choosing her.She’s tough, she’s a reformer, she’s PRO-LIFE, and she’s totally hot. There is no way Obama has a chance now. YAY!!
Too bad Derek was embarrassed by your yelling. (**and , yes, your voice does carry VERY well**)
I woke to the news of the see & hear surprised reporters on all the morning news! That was the first clue that the day would be special!!!!! They were so surprised on what might be happening they didn’t have time to tell their audiences what to think and how to react ——- second great moment of the day!
Top moment–the introduction of Sarah Palin.
How cool that you were there.
@SpiderDad -
Actually, I think they make the *perfect* team. Where she lacks in foreign policy, McCain excels in it. Where he’s not quite as conservative as I’d like him to be, she excels in it. Her record is so top notch that the Dems have had a hell of a time finding anything bad to say about her. But let’s look at what you said about experience: Sarah Palin has more experience as a VICE president than Obama has as the actual Presidential nominee. She’s been commander in chief of her state’s Guard reserve unit as governor and before she was in that position, she worked in the state’s oil department, weeding out money leaks and folks who were cheating the system. If *she* were running for president, I’d vote for her.
Yeah, she hasn’t had experience in foreign policy, but that’s what the president is for… Unless you’re Obama. Then you’re just a puppet. =)
@AvenueToTheReal -
That’s because you’re f-ing smart. I would say I love you Norimoto, but Pixie would be up my ass in a heartbeat.
@pdueck -
There were rumors he was going to leak his VP pick the night of Obama’s acceptance speech to kill his thunder completely. I’m glad he didn’t this was MUCH classier and she deserved the full attention she got.
@happypureanger -
Hi Joyjoy.I’ve never been to a Dem’s convention before but only because I’ve never been where one was at. I’d certainly attend it. (especially if it was free like this one.) Just because I’m not a democrat doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy seeing alternative points of view. I like to understand where my opponent is coming from so I can better and more fairly debate them. BTW, I knew you’d love the feminism angle of this pick. I know you so well. ^_^
@front_desk_michy -
Crazy Michy. I love you.
@millie_lou -
Did you see my exciting fifteen second video? Geez, what a bummer to have my battery die right then. I thought I was going to impress you all. Psh. I fail.
@life_by_us -
15 seconds of McCain far excels any 30 minutes of Obama! At least you have the video,albeit short.
wow, why were you at the rally?
McCain’s move was brilliant as far as politics is concerned. I personally believe that she DOES have very little experience, but that is a horrible argument for democrats to use because Barrack has even LESS experience. It’s like a double standard to put up such an argument.
I noticed your 130 IQ picture. You should take an EQ test and tell me what you get. My EQ and IQ are like completely opposite in that I’m a social retard…..
@zhaoyun1122 - I was at the rally for two reasons.
1. FREE TICKETS BABY!
2. I’ve been trying waaay to hard to convince myself to vote Republican and have been leaning Libertarian. I’m BIG TIME pro-life so I can’t vote for Infanticide Obama. McCain’s VP pick sold me. She’s everything I want in a president. Maybe in four years her name will be at the top of the ticket.
@Ironstove - Dude, where do you find an EQ test? I already know now that if it diagnoses social retardation, I’ll be classified an uber nerd. Video games = my friends.
@life_by_us - what is it like at those rallies? When our Prime Minister showed up it was not quite as loud as I thought it would be.
Blah I wish I could’ve been there. You’re ridiculously lucky!
http://www.queendom.com/tests/access_page/index.htm?idRegTest=1121
That’s the one that I used. It’s like 100 questions so only take it when you have some time lol.
Chuck Norris. For VP. The end.
Hahahahaha.
I think that it was a spectacular move, even though I personally don’t like Palin. I know that this is me being uber picky, but she was the mayor of Wasilla, not Juno. And her nickname, “Sarah Barracuda” came from when she led her high school basketball team to victory in the Alaska small school basketball championship in 1982. One thing I will say about her is that she does seem to stand by her convictions, she has a 4-month old son with Down Syndrome, and her 17 year old daughter is five months pregnant. This just goes to show how pro-life she really is.
@lesannejenk -
Yeah, but that nickname stuck with her because she’s been such a killer in her politics, going after the thieves.
Aside from that, sure she started out as mayor of a small town, but she went on to be governor. That’s one of the things that has driven me insane about the left-wing bloggers and radio show people. They’ve bee calling her “Mayor” left and right, but she’s currently a governor. Something Obama couldn’t claim… But then again, I’m so freaking thrilled about her being so HUGELY pro-life that I’ll look past any “flaws” the left can dig up. I realize our country is probably too progressive to ever get rid of Roe Vs Wade, but I can spend every day praying that America has a change of heart.
@life_by_us -
That’s where I disagree with you, I am pro-choice and I think that overturning Roe v. Wade would be a terrible mistake. It’s kind of hard (even for me) to fully understand why I am pro-choice, but after years and years of so-called “soul-searching” it is what I believe. I am against partial birth abortions and can’t even imagine what those women would be going through to want that done. I don’t believe in using abortion as birth control, as a solvent to those “oops” situations or for bad judgment.
I don’t know much about Palin, other than she seems to be McCain’s opposite in a lot of ways. I know why he made that choice, or probably more accurately, why he agreed to it, but I seriously think that between both Republican and Democratic parties, we’re not going to be fully represented on the ballot come November. It does seem like something is missing. I still am not sure where my vote will fall, but I know that I can’t vote for Obama in good conscience. I do want this country to go the way of renewable energy and our dependence on oil is pushing us toward more drilling, which I don’t exactly like but I know why Palin is in favor of it and it’s not because she hates the environment. I think that in a lot of ways, we’re up a creek right now and there is no best solution, only a less evil one.
I don’t really like politics all that much, I hate the mud-slinging and name calling and all the dirty maneuvers that go on to get laws passed. I was so convicted in my choice November 2004 and then that turned out to be a horrible mistake, so I really have no clue. I’ve been trying to research both McCain and Palin as much as I can, so I can see where they are personally motivated as well as politically. There’s a lot about John McCain I didn’t know, considering he’s my senator. And you’re right, as far as ethics goes, both in business and politics, that’s where Sarah Barracuda seems to kill. It’s about time a politician cared about that.
@lesannejenk - It’s okay to disagree, my friend! I think if MCCain *hadn’t* chosen Palin as his VP, I’d be feeling the same way you have. I’ve been looking for a strong conservative person to put my faith in and I can see that she’s it. So far, the worst thig the Dems have been able to bring up against her is the fact that 24 years ago when her husband was in college, he got pulled over with alcohol on his breath. A college kid was drinking? HOLY LORD! ALERT THE MEDIA!!!
I actually watched a biography on ethics and the history of the two candidates and I was SO impressed with McCain’s background. (you know, P.O.W. and all that.) But I wasn’t terribly impressed with Obama’s history as a president. As a mayor or senator? Maybe. But even with his little bit of time as Senator, I just wasn’t impressed with his credentials.
Besides the fact, his history on later term abortion is downright evil. A woma can have an abortion up to the 9 month point before her natural labor is induced. That makes me sick to my stomache. So this year, I’m proud to vote for McCain. I don’t feel in the slightest that it’s going to be “8 more years of Bush” as the Dems would have you believe. I’m actually very excited. I hope your voting decision gets easier, love!
